Rocked

Reflection:

On the table you see a variety of stones, small rocks.

Now go and chose one, one that represents the rock inside you, then sit down , hold the stone in your hand and reflect:

When was I rocked by Jesus, and how much of a rock am I just now, at this point of my life? Take your time.

Then go to the basin and add a little water on the stone.

What an amazing transformation a drop af water can make!

Intro:

To boldly go, the theme for NYA,

This has to do with mission.

Some of us choke when we hear that word “mission”

We see before us people in other parts of the world being forced into Christian faith one way or the other.

So go and make followers of all people in the world, Jesus said.

That is still the task of every Christian, but from a different perspective. That is what I will try to describe.

Someone said: It is not the church that has a mission, it is the mission that has a church. Church in the sense of fellowship.

Mission comes from the latin word “mittare” which means to send, so the sending itself comes first and then forms a fellowship, a church

So each of us are sent by God. Not as church members, not as people who are cleverer, more educated, more powerful, worth more, knowing better, not as conquerors , but as servants.

We are to make followers by our  example, by showing others in deed what it means to be Christian, to be a follower of Jesus.

To be a missionary in this sense something has to happen to us.

We have to be rocked.

And this is today´s theme, to be rocked by Christ. And to go from rocked to being rock.

Let us hear from the gospel about the man Levi: (Luke 5:27-28)

Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting in the collectors´s booth. Jesus said to him ”Follow me”. So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him.

There was Levi in his every day routine, doing his usual work. whether he was happy or not, we do not know. He certainly wasn´t liked by scribes and pharisees.

Jesus came by, and Levi was rocked to the bottom of his soul. Something happened which meant that nothing could continue as usual.

When Jesus rocks us we can no longer be the same. It may be that we cannot follow immediately, or that we take a lot of detours in the process, that we even think that we know more about the ways of the world than Jesus does , that we know a better way of being church than Jesus, but he won´t stop rocking us, until we ourselves may begin to become rocks.

And the rocks we have to become are like Peter, whose name means the rock. He was called much the same way as Levi, Simon Peter  was everything but faithful and firm, he was rocked and called a thousand times, and still he only got it at the very end, when he himself was crucified head  down. and that because he felt unworthy of  a death similar to that of his master.

To be rocked means realising deep down that a different path in life is necessary when one is sent , to be a rock means that however many troubles, however much chaos and misunderstanding you meet, your life is anchored and based on the same discovery as Peter, not just accepted by  your intellect, but recognised  as something shaking your inside, the words Peter exclaimed when asked by Jesus: And who do you say I am?

And Peter answered: You are the Christ, the son of the living God.

Here everything starts. When that is our answer. You are the Christ, the son of the living god. That is the sending.

Mission begins  there. When you go, more or less boldly, not because you have to, not because convention and rules, and church history  etc. etc tell you to,

But because you yourself are rocked into belief .

And in your joy, and horror, you just follow,

whatever it takes., wherever it takes you,

Rocked by Christ

to  become  yourself , one day ,

his  rock.

After reflection: In her book “struggling to be holy” Judy Hirst tells a story: It goes like this:

On his deathbed Rabbi Zuscha was asked what he thought life beyond the grave would be like. The old man thought for a long time, then he replied: “ I don´t really know, but one thing I do know, when I get there I am not going to be asked”why weren´t you moses, or why weren´t you David. No, I am going to be asked: Why weren´t you Zuscha?”

Being rocked will help you to become more fully the person you hold the potential to be.

Be who you are.

Song:

to boldly go,

your followers in love and peace.
